Description

Delight in this Irresistible Churro Popcorn, a perfect sweet snack combining the crunchy texture of popcorn with a warm, cinnamon-sugar coating reminiscent of traditional churros. Ideal for movie nights, this treat offers a caramel-coated popcorn base infused with buttery, cinnamon-spiced sweetness.

Ingredients

Scale

Popcorn Base

  • 15-16 cups popped popcorn

Caramel Sauce

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cinnamon Sugar Topping

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare caramel mixture: In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the brown sugar, corn syrup, salted butter, and salt. Microwave on high for 1 minute until the butter melts and the mixture begins to bubble.
  2. Cook caramel further: Stir the mixture, then microwave for another minute. Repeat this stirring and microwaving cycle until the mixture has been microwaved for a total of 5 minutes, ensuring it is hot and bubbling.
  3. Add leavening and flavor: Mix in the baking soda and vanilla extract into the hot caramel mixture; stir well. The mixture will foam up slightly, creating a lighter texture.
  4. Coat popcorn: Fill a large paper grocery bag with the popped popcorn. Pour the warm caramel mixture over the popcorn inside the bag, then gently stir to evenly coat all the popcorn pieces.
  5. Microwave coating process: Fold the top of the bag over and place it in the microwave. Cook on high for 1 minute. Remove and shake the bag vigorously without opening it. Microwave for another minute.
  6. Repeat heating and shaking: Continue by shaking the bag again, then microwave for 30 seconds. Shake once more, and microwave for a final 30 seconds to set the coating.
  7. Add cinnamon sugar topping: Combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon in a jar and shake well to mix. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the warm caramel-coated popcorn.
  8. Cool the popcorn: Spread the churro popcorn onto a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool completely, allowing the coating to set and the popcorn to become crispy.

Notes

  • Use fresh popped popcorn for the best texture and flavor.
  • Be careful when handling hot caramel to avoid burns.
  • The paper bag helps evenly distribute heat and coat the popcorn without making a mess.
  • Once cooled, store the churro popcorn in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
  • For a less sweet version, reduce the amount of brown or granulated sugar slightly.
