Ingredients
Scale
Phyllo Layers
- 1 package Phyllo Dough (Keep covered with a damp towel while working)
- 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter (Melted for brushing)
Filling
- 1 cup Semolina Flour
- 3 large Eggs
- 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar
- 2 cups Whole Milk (Can substitute with almond milk for dairy-free)
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
Topping
- 1/2 cup Honey (Warm for easier drizzling)
- 2 tablespoons Toasted Sesame Seeds
Instructions
- Preparation: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Phyllo Layering: Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the greased dish and brush it generously with melted butter. Repeat this process with six more sheets, ensuring each layer is coated with butter to achieve a crisp texture.
- Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the semolina flour, eggs, granulated sugar, whole milk, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until the mixture becomes smooth and well combined, creating a custard-like consistency.
- Assemble Pie: Pour the semolina mixture evenly over the layered phyllo base in the baking dish.
- Top Phyllo Layers: Add a final layer of phyllo sheets on top of the filling, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next. Once complete, lightly score the top sheet with a knife to allow for easier cutting after baking.
- Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the phyllo is golden brown and the filling is set. Once baked, remove from the oven and cool for about 10 minutes.
- Finish and Serve: Warm the honey slightly and drizzle it generously over the cooled pie. Finally, sprinkle the toasted sesame seeds on top for an added nutty flavor and texture. Cut into serving pieces and enjoy.
Notes
- Keep phyllo dough covered with a damp towel at all times to prevent it from drying out.
- You can substitute whole milk with almond milk for a dairy-free version.
- Lightly scoring the top layer before baking helps with serving the pie more easily once cooked.
- Let the pie cool slightly before drizzling honey, as it helps the topping absorb better and enhances flavors.
- Use unsalted butter to control the saltiness of the dish effectively.
