Cupcakes
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- Green food coloring (gel or liquid, to achieve desired color)
Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 4 tablespoons heavy cream (or milk)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Green food coloring (gel or liquid, to achieve desired color)
Decoration
- Chocolate chips (for eyes)
- Chocolate bar or chocolate melts (for jagged smiles)
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, beat the large egg, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth and well blended.
- Make the Batter: Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing gently to combine. Stir in the boiling water and add a few drops of green food coloring. Mix until the batter is smooth and the color is evenly distributed.
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners to prepare for baking.
- Fill Cupcake Liners: Pour the batter into the liners, filling each about two-thirds full to allow room for rising during baking.
- Bake Cupcakes: Bake the cupcakes in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool Cupcakes: Remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
- Prepare Buttercream Frosting: Beat the softened unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract, beating until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Add Coloring to Frosting: Mix in green food coloring until the desired vibrant green hue is achieved.
- Decorate Cupcakes: Using a piping bag or a knife, frost the cooled cupcakes with the green buttercream, creating a spooky and textured look.
- Add Facial Features: Place chocolate chips on the frosted cupcakes as eyes and use pieces of chocolate bar or melts to create jagged smiles, completing the Frankenstein monster look.
Notes
- Ensure the cupcakes are completely cooled before frosting to prevent the buttercream from melting.
- Adjust food coloring gradually to achieve the perfect green shade without altering the flavor.
- You can substitute buttermilk with a mixture of milk and lemon juice if unavailable.
- Store the decorated cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
- For a richer chocolate taste, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
