Ingredients
Scale
Halwa Base
- 4 tablespoons Ghee (Provides richness and moisture; substitute with butter if needed.)
- 1 cup Whole Wheat Flour (Aata) (Ensure it’s fresh for the best flavor.)
Liquid & Sweeteners
- 2 cups Hot Boiling Water (Helps create a soft, smooth texture.)
- 3/4 cup Sugar (Can substitute with jaggery or brown sugar.)
Flavorings & Garnish
- 1 teaspoon Cardamom Powder (Optional but recommended for authentic taste.)
- 1/2 cup Chopped Nuts (Almonds, Cashews) (Other nuts like pistachios can also be added.)
Instructions
- Heat the Ghee: In a non-stick pan, melt 4 tablespoons of ghee over medium-low heat to provide the base fat and aroma for the halwa.
- Roast the Flour: Add 1 cup of whole wheat flour to the melted ghee. Stir continuously for 5-7 minutes until the flour turns golden brown and releases a nutty fragrance, ensuring it does not burn.
- Add Hot Water Gradually: Slowly pour in 2 cups of hot boiling water while stirring constantly to avoid lumps, creating a smooth batter.
- Cook to Semi-Solid Consistency: Keep stirring the mixture until it thickens, the halwa becomes semi-solid, and the ghee begins to separate, signifying it’s cooked well.
- Add Sugar: Mix in 3/4 cup sugar, stirring thoroughly until the sugar fully dissolves and blends evenly into the halwa.
- Incorporate Flavorings: Stir in 1 teaspoon cardamom powder and 1/2 cup chopped nuts (almonds and cashews) to enhance aroma, taste, and texture.
- Final Cooking: Cook for an additional 2 minutes to integrate all flavors well.
- Serve Warm: Dish out the halwa warm, garnished with extra chopped nuts if desired for visual appeal and added crunch.
Notes
- Ensure the whole wheat flour is fresh to prevent bitterness and enhance flavor.
- Constant stirring is critical, especially when roasting flour and adding water, to avoid lumps and burning.
- Ghee can be substituted with unsalted butter, but ghee imparts the authentic taste and aroma.
- You can replace sugar with jaggery or brown sugar for a deeper, richer sweetness.
- Add nuts of your choice like pistachios or walnuts for variety.
- Serve immediately for best texture and warmth, as halwa thickens upon cooling.
