Ingredients
Scale
Bread
- 1 loaf sub or grinder bread, about 12 inches long
Meats and Cheese
- 1/2 pound sliced roasted pork
- 1/2 pound sliced ham
- 6 slices Swiss cheese
Condiments and Vegetables
- 1/2 cup dill pickles, chopped
- 1/4 cup yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced lettuce (optional)
- 2 tablespoons sliced red onion (optional)
Seasonings and Oil
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for toasting the sandwich.
- Warm and chop meats: In a skillet over medium heat, warm the sliced roasted pork and ham until heated through. Then roughly chop the meats into small pieces and transfer them to a bowl.
- Mix the filling: Add the chopped dill pickles, yellow mustard, mayonnaise, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to the bowl with the chopped meats and stir until everything is well combined.
- Prepare the bread: Slice the loaf of sub or grinder bread open lengthwise. Lightly brush the inside of the bread with olive oil for added flavor and moisture.
- Assemble the sandwich: Layer the Swiss cheese slices evenly on the bottom half of the bread. Spread the chopped meat mixture evenly over the cheese. If using, add thinly sliced lettuce and red onion on top of the meat mixture.
- Wrap and bake: Place the top half of the bread over the filling and wrap the entire sandwich tightly in foil. Bake in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese melts and the sandwich is heated through.
- Serve: Remove the sandwich from the oven, slice into portions, and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Press the sandwich lightly before baking to achieve a more compact and traditional grinder texture.
- Add a dash of hot sauce to the filling for an extra kick of flavor.
- Substitute Swiss cheese with provolone for a different cheese profile.
