Ingredients
Scale
For the French Toast:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 8 slices cinnamon swirl bread (or any bread of choice)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
For the Cream Cheese Icing:
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional toppings:
- Maple syrup
- Fresh fruit
- Whipped cream
Instructions
- Prepare the egg mixture: In a large mixing bowl, crack the 4 large eggs and whisk until smooth. Add 1 cup of whole milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, mixing well. Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of salt, then whisk until everything is combined and slightly frothy.
- Heat the skillet: Place a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Allow it to melt completely to coat the cooking surface evenly.
- Soak the bread: Dip each slice of cinnamon swirl bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides but avoiding soaking it too long to prevent sogginess.
- Cook the French toast: Place the soaked bread slices carefully onto the heated skillet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook each slice for 3–4 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and cook for an additional 3–4 minutes on the other side.
- Keep warm: Transfer the cooked French toast to a plate and keep warm in a low oven set to around 200°F while you finish cooking the remaining slices.
- Make the cream cheese icing: In a small mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons softened cream cheese. Add 1 tablespoon milk and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, mixing until smooth and creamy. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed.
- Serve: Stack slices of warm French toast on serving plates. Drizzle the cream cheese icing generously over the top. Optionally, serve with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream for added flavor and presentation.
Notes
- Use cinnamon swirl bread for the best cinnamon flavor, but any bread will work.
- Do not soak the bread too long in the egg mixture to avoid soggy French toast.
- Keeping cooked slices warm in a low oven ensures even serving temperature.
- Adjust the cream cheese icing thickness by adding more or less milk as desired.
- This recipe serves 4 and can be easily doubled for larger gatherings.
