Ingredients
Scale
Turkey Burgers:
- 3 tablespoons avocado oil (plus more for frying)
- 1 tablespoon coconut aminos
- 1 teaspoon crushed chipotle chile pepper flakes (or less, to taste)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 lb ground turkey
Chipotle Mayo:
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ½ teaspoon chipotle chile powder (or more crushed chipotle chile pepper)
Optional for Serving:
- Burger buns
- Salsa
- Avocado, thinly sliced
- Fresh cilantro
Instructions
- Prepare Turkey Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together avocado oil, coconut aminos, crushed chipotle chile flakes, smoked paprika, ground cumin, dried oregano, chopped fresh cilantro, and sea salt until well combined. Add ground turkey to the bowl and gently mix with the spice mixture until just combined—avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
- Shape Patties: Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions. Form each portion into a patty shape and make a slight thumbprint indentation in the center of each patty; this helps prevent the burgers from bulging while cooking.
- Cook Burgers – Stovetop Method: Heat some avocado oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through.
- Cook Burgers – Oven Method: Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C). Place patties on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 16-18 minutes. Then, broil for 2-3 minutes to achieve a nicely browned top.
- Cook Burgers – Grill Method: Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Grill burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side until cooked through.
- Check Internal Temperature: Whichever cooking method is used, cook the patties until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Allow them to rest for 5 minutes so the temperature rises to 165°F (74°C) ensuring safe consumption.
- Make Chipotle Mayo: While the turkey burgers are cooking, whisk together mayonnaise and chipotle chile powder in a small bowl until smooth and well combined.
- Assemble and Serve: Serve the turkey burgers on burger buns with a generous spread of chipotle mayo. Top with sliced avocado, fresh cilantro, and salsa as desired for extra flavor and freshness.
Notes
- Do not overmix the ground turkey mixture to avoid dense burgers.
- The thumbprint indentation helps burgers cook evenly without puffing up.
- You can adjust the amount of chipotle chili flakes/powder to suit your spice preference.
- Resting the burgers after cooking increases juiciness and allows safer internal temperature.
- The recipe works equally well on stovetop, oven, or grill; choose your preferred method.
