Egg Wash
- 1 egg (beaten)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Roll Out Puff Pastry: Lightly flour your work surface and unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Roll it out gently to smooth any creases and slightly thin the sheet for even baking.
- Apply Egg Wash and Cheese Mixture: Brush the entire surface of the puff pastry with the beaten egg. In a small bowl, combine cheddar, Parmesan, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle the cheese mixture evenly over half of the pastry.
- Fold and Seal: Fold the other half of the puff pastry over the cheese-covered side to create a sandwich. Roll it gently to press the layers together and ensure the cheese stays inside.
- Final Egg Wash and Optional Cheese: Brush the top of the folded pastry with more egg wash. Sprinkle extra cheese on top if desired for added flavor and color.
- Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the pastry into ½-inch wide strips. Twist each strip gently to create the classic spiral shape and lay them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart to allow puffing during baking.
- Bake: Bake the cheese straws in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes until they are golden brown, crispy, and puffed up.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cheese straws to cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving to enjoy their full flavor and crisp texture.
