Description

Delicious and crispy Puff Pastry Cheese Straws made with sharp cheddar and Parmesan cheeses, seasoned with garlic powder and paprika. These easy-to-make appetizers are perfect for parties or a savory snack, featuring flaky puff pastry twisted to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (thawed)

Cheese Mixture

  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Black pepper to taste (optional)

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg (beaten)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Roll Out Puff Pastry: Lightly flour your work surface and unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Roll it out gently to smooth any creases and slightly thin the sheet for even baking.
  3. Apply Egg Wash and Cheese Mixture: Brush the entire surface of the puff pastry with the beaten egg. In a small bowl, combine cheddar, Parmesan, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle the cheese mixture evenly over half of the pastry.
  4. Fold and Seal: Fold the other half of the puff pastry over the cheese-covered side to create a sandwich. Roll it gently to press the layers together and ensure the cheese stays inside.
  5. Final Egg Wash and Optional Cheese: Brush the top of the folded pastry with more egg wash. Sprinkle extra cheese on top if desired for added flavor and color.
  6. Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the pastry into ½-inch wide strips. Twist each strip gently to create the classic spiral shape and lay them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart to allow puffing during baking.
  7. Bake: Bake the cheese straws in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes until they are golden brown, crispy, and puffed up.
  8. Cool and Serve: Allow the cheese straws to cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving to enjoy their full flavor and crisp texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute sharp cheddar with Gruyère for a different flavor profile.
  • Try sprinkling everything bagel seasoning on top instead of extra cheese for added zest.
  • Cheese straws are best served fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes to regain crispness.
