Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 3/4 cup plain yogurt (or buttermilk)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter (plus more for greasing)
Optional
- Herbs or seasonings for flavor (such as garlic powder or chopped rosemary)
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to combine all the leavening and seasoning elements evenly.
- Add Wet Ingredients and Form Dough: Add the plain yogurt and olive oil to the dry mixture. Mix everything together until a soft dough forms that is slightly sticky but manageable.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 2–3 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
- Shape the Flatbreads: Divide the dough into 4 to 6 equal portions, roll each piece into a ball, then flatten each slightly to about 1/2 inch thick rounds suitable for cooking on the skillet.
- Heat and Prepare Skillet: Preheat a nonstick skillet or cast iron pan over medium heat. Grease lightly with olive oil or butter to prevent sticking.
- Cook the Flatbreads: Place one or two dough rounds in the skillet depending on size. Cook each side for 3–5 minutes until golden brown and puffed up. Adjust the heat if needed to avoid burning.
- Repeat and Serve: Continue cooking the remaining rounds, greasing the pan as necessary. Allow the cooked flatbreads to cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
- Best enjoyed warm but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Add chopped herbs or shredded cheese into the dough for extra flavor.
- Use these flatbreads as quick flatbreads, sandwich wraps, or as a side for soups and stews.
