Ingredients
Scale
Wonton Filling
- 1/2 pound ground pork or chicken
- 2 green onions, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Wontons
- 24 wonton wrappers
Soup
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups water
- 1 medium carrot, thinly sliced
- 1 cup baby spinach or bok choy
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce or sesame oil for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine ground pork or chicken, chopped green onions, grated ginger, minced garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil thoroughly to blend all flavors.
- Fill the wontons: Place about 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, fold into a triangle or your preferred shape, and press firmly to seal tightly to prevent leakage during cooking.
- Cook the wontons: In a large pot, bring chicken broth and water to a boil. Carefully add the formed wontons into the boiling broth, then reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until the wontons float and the filling is fully cooked through.
- Add vegetables: Add the sliced carrots and baby spinach or bok choy to the pot, and cook for an additional 2 minutes until the vegetables are tender but still vibrant.
- Season and serve: Season the soup with salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped cilantro and an optional drizzle of soy sauce or sesame oil before serving hot.
Notes
- Wontons can be made ahead and frozen; cook directly from frozen by adding a couple extra minutes to simmering time.
- For variation, use shrimp or a mixture of pork and shrimp in the filling.
- Enhance the soup by adding mushrooms or snow peas for additional vegetables and texture.
