Description

Homemade Wonton Soup is a comforting and flavorful Chinese dish featuring delicate wontons filled with seasoned pork or chicken, cooked in a savory chicken broth with fresh vegetables. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner, this soup combines tender wontons with nutritious greens and a light broth for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Wonton Filling

  • 1/2 pound ground pork or chicken
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Wontons

  • 24 wonton wrappers

Soup

  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 medium carrot, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup baby spinach or bok choy
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce or sesame oil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine ground pork or chicken, chopped green onions, grated ginger, minced garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil thoroughly to blend all flavors.
  2. Fill the wontons: Place about 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, fold into a triangle or your preferred shape, and press firmly to seal tightly to prevent leakage during cooking.
  3. Cook the wontons: In a large pot, bring chicken broth and water to a boil. Carefully add the formed wontons into the boiling broth, then reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until the wontons float and the filling is fully cooked through.
  4. Add vegetables: Add the sliced carrots and baby spinach or bok choy to the pot, and cook for an additional 2 minutes until the vegetables are tender but still vibrant.
  5. Season and serve: Season the soup with salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped cilantro and an optional drizzle of soy sauce or sesame oil before serving hot.

Notes

  • Wontons can be made ahead and frozen; cook directly from frozen by adding a couple extra minutes to simmering time.
  • For variation, use shrimp or a mixture of pork and shrimp in the filling.
  • Enhance the soup by adding mushrooms or snow peas for additional vegetables and texture.
