Description

Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Doughnuts are a classic treat featuring a light, fluffy texture with a crispy golden exterior. These homemade doughnuts are easy to make with simple pantry ingredients and fried to perfection, then dusted with powdered sugar for a sweet finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Doughnuts

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
  • Oil for frying (enough for deep frying)

Topping

  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  2. Mix wet ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and melted unsalted butter until smooth.
  3. Combine wet and dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until a soft dough forms, being careful not to overmix.
  4. Roll and cut dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a doughnut cutter or two round cutters (one large and one small) to cut out doughnut shapes.
  5. Heat oil: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large, deep pot to 350°F (175°C), ensuring there is enough oil for the doughnuts to float while frying.
  6. Fry doughnuts: Carefully place the doughnuts in the hot oil in batches, frying them for 2 to 3 minutes total, turning once halfway through frying, until the doughnuts are golden brown on both sides.
  7. Drain and dust: Remove the fried doughnuts with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. While still warm, dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil temperature stays consistent at 350°F to avoid greasy or undercooked doughnuts.
  • If dough is sticky, lightly flour your hands and rolling surface but avoid adding too much flour to keep doughnuts tender.
  • Work quickly when cutting and frying doughnuts to preserve dough freshness and prevent spreading.
  • You can substitute milk with buttermilk for a slightly tangier flavor and softer texture.
  • Store leftover doughnuts in an airtight container and consume within 1-2 days for best freshness.
