Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
- 2 tablespoons honey (optional for extra sweetness)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, eggs, vegetable oil (or melted butter), and honey if using, ensuring the mixture is smooth and well blended.
- Make Batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir gently just until everything is combined; avoid overmixing to keep the cornbread tender.
- Pour and Smooth Batter: Transfer the batter to the prepared baking dish and use a spatula to smooth out the top evenly.
- Bake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top turns a beautiful golden color.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cornbread to cool slightly before slicing into 9 squares. Serve warm, optionally with butter, jam, chili, or soup.
Notes
- For a richer texture, substitute half the milk with buttermilk.
- This cornbread pairs excellently with chili or soups.
