Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
Filling
- 1 cup mini chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Make Dough: Add granulated sugar, softened butter, salt, and egg to the yeast mixture and mix well. Gradually add flour one cup at a time, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Prepare Filling: In a small bowl, mix cocoa powder, cinnamon, and brown sugar.
- Shape Rolls: Roll dough out on a floured surface into a 16×12-inch rectangle. Brush with melted butter, sprinkle evenly with cocoa-cinnamon mixture and chocolate chips. Starting from the long edge, tightly roll up the dough and slice into 12 even rolls.
- Second Rise: Place rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Bake Rolls: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake rolls for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Make Glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Glaze Rolls: Drizzle the glaze over warm rolls before serving.
Notes
- For extra richness, use dark chocolate chips or add a pinch of espresso powder to the filling.
- Rolls can be prepared the night before and baked fresh in the morning for convenience.
- Ensure the milk is warm but not hot to properly activate the yeast.
- Be careful not to overbake the rolls to keep them soft and moist.
