Description

Burrito Skulls are a fun and spooky twist on classic burritos, featuring seasoned ground beef, rice, beans, and cheese stuffed inside crescent dough shaped like skulls. Perfect for a Halloween dinner or party snack, these baked treats combine Mexican-inspired flavors with a playful presentation.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1/2 cup black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup salsa
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese

Dough & Serving

  • 1 (8-ounce) can refrigerated crescent dough sheet or pizza dough
  • Nonstick spray
  • Sour cream, for serving
  • Guacamole, for serving
  • Extra salsa, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare mold: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and spray a skull-shaped silicone baking mold with nonstick spray to ensure easy release after baking.
  2. Cook aromatics: In a skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add the diced onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, stirring to release fragrance.
  3. Brown the beef: Add ground beef to the skillet, cooking until browned and breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Drain excess grease from the pan to keep the mixture from being overly greasy.
  4. Season the meat: Stir in the taco seasoning mix and water, then simmer for 3–4 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef well.
  5. Combine filling: Remove the skillet from heat. Mix in the cooked rice, black beans, salsa, and shredded cheese, combining all the ingredients evenly to create the burrito filling.
  6. Prepare dough: Unroll the crescent or pizza dough and cut into sections large enough to line each cavity of the skull mold. Press the dough gently into each cavity, leaving some overhang for sealing later.
  7. Fill and seal skulls: Spoon the burrito filling into each dough-lined skull cavity. Fold the overhanging dough over the filling to seal the edges securely.
  8. Bake skulls: Place the filled molds in the preheated oven and bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Cool and serve: Allow the burrito skulls to cool for 5 minutes in the mold to firm up, then carefully remove them. Serve warm with sour cream, guacamole, and extra salsa on the side.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey, shredded chicken, or plant-based meat alternatives depending on your preference.
  • Using a skull-shaped silicone mold makes this recipe especially great for Halloween parties or themed events.
  • Ensure the dough is sealed completely to prevent filling leakage during baking.
  • Leftover burrito skulls can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven for best texture retention.
