Ingredients
Scale
Noodles
- 8 ounces lo mein noodles or spaghetti
Beef and Vegetables
- 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 3 cups broccoli florets
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
Sauce
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 cup beef or chicken broth
Oils and Garnish
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons chopped green onions, for garnish
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Cook Noodles: Cook the lo mein noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain well and set aside to keep warm.
- Brown the Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced flank steak and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until browned on the outside but not fully cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
- Sauté Aromatics and Broccoli: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and sliced onion, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant. Then add the broccoli florets and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until they are tender-crisp, maintaining a slight crunch.
- Prepare Sauce: While the broccoli cooks, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, ground black pepper, and beef or chicken broth in a small bowl until combined.
- Combine and Finish Cooking: Return the browned beef to the skillet with the broccoli and onions. Add the cooked noodles and pour the sauce over the mixture. Toss everything well to coat evenly and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes to heat through and allow the flavors to meld.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds, if using. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein.
Notes
- For enhanced flavor, marinate the beef in 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 teaspoon cornstarch for 15 minutes before cooking.
- Substitute chicken or tofu for beef to create tasty variations.
- Adjust the sauce ingredients to your preference for more sweetness or saltiness.
